A Child’s Prayer

I read this poem & wrote it down while pregnant, thinking that I would like to read it to Devin to help him learn to have a kind heart as he grew up. But like so many other things with kids, we adults can learn a lot from them. So maybe this poem should be entitled “An Adult’s Prayer” instead.

God, make my life a little light, within the world to glow,

A little flame that burneth bright, wherever I may go.

God, make my life a little flower, that giveth joy to all,

Content to bloom in native bower, although the place be small.

God, make my life a little song, that comforts the sad,

That helpeth others to be strong, and makes the singer glad.

God, make my life a little staff, whereon the weak may rest,

And so what health & strength I have, may serve my neighbor best.

God, make my life a little hymm of tenderness & praise;

Of faith that never waxeth dim,

In all His wonderous ways.
