Help Me Be Good Series By Joy Berry
There’s this terrific children’s book series called “Help Me Be Good” by Joy Berry with twenty-something books total. Each book focuses on a specific topic such as, “Whining”, “Throwing Tantrums”, “Interrupting”, “Overdoing it”, “Being Careless”, “Teasing”, etc., etc. . My Mom just got me a second hand set that seems brand new. I looked and you can find the set online if you shop around a bit.
I like how each book is a story (humorous at parts too!) about 2 or 3 kids, and always starts off something like, “This book is about Katie and Tammy. Reading about Katie and Tammy can help you understand and deal with…” or another book will be all about “Sam and Johnny”. It’s helpful because then you can remind your kid later about “Katie & Tammy” if they’re exhibiting a similar behavior and help them relate it to the story and suggest some of the solutions that are listed in the book or other solutions such as prayer, quoting a verse or whatnot. I’ve found it to be a very useful supplement when reading with children (Bible stories, verses, etc.) and even though it’s not Christian per se it’s still quite traditional and fairly Word based. Kids up to 8 or even 10 might enjoy it though I wouldn’t purchase it solely for that age group…maybe up to 7, depending on your child.
