Nocturnal Delay Tactics
Usually Devin’s fairly easy to put to sleep, but some nights he seems to not be able to stop talking, like the other night for instances. Let me give you some examples of what we end up talking about.
Devin: I had that flavored yogurt today that you said was just for adults, but Bitty said it was fine.
Me: Well the reason why it’s not so good for kids is because it has aspartame in it which is an artificial sweetener that isn’t good for you, it’s like a chemical that’s especially bad for kids.
Devin: So even though ‘aspartame’ is a beautiful word it’s still bad for you.
Me: Yes, even though aspartame is a beautiful word (huh!?) it’s still bad for you.
Devin: Bitty said that some people call goose bumps goose pimples but she thinks that goose pimples are gross. I think 101 people in the world like goose pimples and 10000 and 300 people like bumps better.
Devin: Tell me again what Tigger said to Pooh.
Me: Look at the biceps on that bear! I’m unworthy to dangle from the same precipice!
Devin: What are biceps?
Devin: What’s unworthy?
Devin: What’s dangle?
Devin: What’s precipice?
Like a true teacher I want to take advantage of the opportunity to increase his vocabulary so I describe the meaning of each word, periodically getting frustrated that Devin’s not going to sleep, only to succumb to answering more definitions to words and more questions, all in the name of learning! What’s a parent/teacher to do? I end up thinking about how sad the word “unworthy” is…thank God we’re all worthy enough for the Lord. I also end up putting myself to sleep.

Ha, I do the same thing. No discipline whatsoever when it comes to those adorable questions and peeks into their amazing minds.
